Smooth, Matte & Built for Indoor and Outdoor Living
Honed concrete occupies an excellent middle ground between raw poured concrete and the high-gloss polish of a fully polished floor. Like polished concrete, it's ground with diamond tooling to produce a smooth, refined surface — but the process stops short of the high-gloss finish, leaving a satin to matte surface that reads as quietly sophisticated rather than reflective and shiny. It's particularly well-suited to outdoor living spaces and anywhere glare or slip risk would rule out a polished finish.
Our Adelaide Honed Concrete service covers both new pours and the grinding and honing of existing slabs. For outdoor entertaining areas, pool surrounds, covered patios, and indoor living areas where you want a premium look without the full mirror-polish effect, honed concrete delivers a genuinely refined result at a price point below full polishing. The aggregate exposure level can be specified — from cream finish where only the cement paste shows, to a medium salt-and-pepper reveal where the aggregate begins to appear.
Colour and staining can also be incorporated into honed concrete — either as integral colour in the mix or as an applied stain after grinding — giving you additional control over the final tone. Natural grey honed concrete is a timeless choice that suits almost any home style, while warm terracotta or charcoal tones can be specified to tie the surface into the home's existing palette.
Our Process
1. Consultation & Exposure Selection
We discuss the desired aggregate exposure level — from cream through to full aggregate reveal — and whether colour, staining, or a natural grey finish best suits the space.
2. Site Preparation or Slab Assessment
For new pours, excavation, formwork, and reinforcement are completed to spec. For existing slabs, we assess the surface and confirm it's suitable for grinding and honing.
3. Grinding & Honing
Using diamond grinding equipment, we progressively work through grits to open the surface, reveal the desired aggregate level, and achieve a smooth, uniform matte finish.
4. Densifying & Sealing
A chemical densifier is applied to harden and dust-proof the surface, followed by a penetrating sealer that protects without creating a surface sheen — maintaining the natural matte look.
Why Choose Honed Concrete
Honed concrete is the practical choice when you want a polished, refined look without the limitations of a high-gloss surface. It's at home in modern outdoor living spaces as much as it is in contemporary interiors.
Refined matte finish that suits both contemporary and traditional architecture
Safe for outdoor use — non-reflective and non-slip compared to high-gloss polished
Works on new pours and existing slabs in good condition
Natural grey or coloured options to suit any design direction
Reveals the natural aggregate character of the concrete for visual interest
Low maintenance — dust, mop, and reseal periodically
More affordable than full polished concrete while delivering a premium result
We use premium diamond tooling and chemical densifiers on every job — the same equipment used for commercial polished concrete projects.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between honed and polished concrete?
Both use diamond grinding, but polished concrete continues to progressively finer grits until a high-gloss, mirror-like finish is achieved. Honed concrete stops at a medium grit level, producing a smooth but matte or satin surface — no shine, no reflection. Honed is more appropriate for outdoor areas or where glare and slip risk are concerns.
Can honed concrete be used outdoors?
Yes — unlike polished concrete, honed concrete is well-suited to outdoor applications. The matte finish doesn't create glare, and the surface provides better traction underfoot than a high-gloss polish. It's popular for outdoor entertaining areas, pool surrounds, and covered patios.
Is honed concrete slippery when wet?
Honed concrete has significantly better grip than polished concrete. For extra slip resistance in wet outdoor areas, we can specify a coarser grit level or apply a penetrating sealer with anti-slip additives.
How do you maintain honed concrete?
Regular sweeping and damp mopping is all that's needed for day-to-day maintenance. A penetrating reseal every 3–5 years protects the surface from staining and moisture ingress. Avoid harsh acidic cleaners that can damage the surface.
